ROSY CHEEKS FOR WINTER

I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t really a huge blush girl throughout life. I think it’s because I never thought I would find a color that would really make my cheeks pop (being that I have tan skin). Once I started contouring my face, I realized the importance of blush in the process. This is when I discovered Clinique’s Blushwear Cream Stick. Here’s what I love:

  • Texture: I harp on this all the time, but I have dry skin, so any creamy product works great on me.
  • Easy Applicator: The fact that it is in stick form makes it perfect to apply the perfect line across your cheek for blending
  • Color: I found that 03 Rosy Blush works perfect with my skin tone.

Winter is a great time to discover the perfect blush. Your cheeks are already looking rosy, so you might as well even out your skin by throwing on a color that goes well with your skin type. If you’re wondering where the blush should be applied on your cheeks, check out my blog post on contouring your face here

Do YOU use blush?  If so, what’s YOUR favorite?

OLAY DID IT AGAIN: BEST, AFFORDABLE EYE CREAM

Bags, dark circles, wrinkles, and dryness- I don’t understand why any of these problems exist, but the fact of the matter is that they do, so as women we go on the hunt for the best possible way to treat the problem. There are thousands of eye creams out there that promise the same thing. They say they are the best out there and no other cream can compare to what their magic cream can do. I’ve fallen for the same tricks most of you have, and 50+ dollars later, was heavily disappointed.

After trial and error, I finally found an eye cream that helps with moisturizing, dark circles, and anti-aging (yet to be determined and hopefully won’t be for a very long time!). SO here it is:

OLAY Total Effects Eye Transforming Cream:

I’ve always been a fan of Olay for the simple fact that the brand makes quality products for the mass market. This is the first eye cream I’ve come across that doesn’t cost a fortune and gives me the results that I am looking for. You can learn more about this eye cream including key ingredients that make this cream work the way it does and application instructions on their website.

BTW, if you happen to have $130 dollars to spare (nbd), I have another recommendation that I’ve tried out. Shiseido Future Solution LX  has unmatchable hydration and has been rated as a top eye cream by virtually every beauty magazine. I just don’t think it’s worth it, especially when I think about how many MAC eyeshadows I could get for the same price (it’s 8 incase you were wondering).

What’s YOUR favorite eye cream?

PACKAGING PERFECTION: BURBERRY LIP MIST LIPSTICK

I came across this lipstick a few months ago and couldn’t stop staring at it… #suckerforfabpackaging

Burberry Lip Mist Natural Sheer Lipstick:

Every detail about this lipstick is perfect. From the outer packaging to the intricate details on the actual shade itself. Beyond that, the texture of the long lasting lipstick is noticeably creamy. The idea behind the name of the lipstick is the moistening element, leaving your lips feeling hydrated. It def on the pricier side, but if you’re a designer buff, I recommend trying this line out! If you’re looking for more affordable shades, check out my posting on the perfect pink lip or the safe yet sexy nude lip. Below is a picture of my four favorite shades in the line that I have found look great with my skin/lip pigmentation:

  • 202 Brown Sugar: If you are looking for a neutral color that can be worn often, this is the shade to go with. It blends well with the natural color of my lip and adds a little more luster than most of my lip sticks.
  • 207 Camelia Pink: This one is a fun fuschia shade that screams personality. It def takes some getting used to as most bright pink lip colors do, but if you are looking for a color that’s diff from your regular shades, I’d go with this one. Depending on your skin color, 207 will be your best bets for a bright, fun pink!
  • 208 Stormy Pink: This shade didn’t have as dramatic of an impact on my lips as 207 did, but still added a noticeably pinker tone to my lips.
  • 209 Feather Pink: This shade showed up on my skin as a lighter pink. I think this shade would look better on someone that was a shade lighter than me, but you could def make it work if you have a darker complexion as well!

For tips on how to wear pink shades, read my blog on what clothes and hair dos go best with this look!

LIQUID SOAP, THE BRUSH CLEANER?

Most people just keep using their brushes and never take the time to clean them (I used to be that girl). It’s really gross thinking about the bacteria/natural oil that accumulates on your brushes within a few days, let alone the dust in the air that the brushes pick up before you put them on your face! For those who aren’t cleaning your brushes because the cleaners are too expensive (only reason I could see why anyone wouldn’t!), remember that cleaning them is the best way to preserve them for long term use. More importantly, there are cheap alternatives to use to clean your brushes that you already buy for other purposes. To be honest, the brush cleaners sold at stores are way over priced and unnecessary. I’d rather spend that money on some new products.

If you’re like me and know the importance of cleaning your brushes but looking for a more recession friendly way to do so, I have the solution for you. There are a few items that work great on makeup brushes, and the best part about them is that you should have them around your house: 1) Shampoo/Baby Shampoo 2) Liquid Soap

As long as the soap is mild, not thick, and relatively light weight, you can use it to clean your brushes. Here’s how:

  1. Wet the brushes under the sink with water. Make sure to get all the bristles in order to get the best results.
  2. Instead of putting the soap directly on the brush, put a small amount (the size of a penny or less depending on how many brushes are being cleaned) into your hand.
  3. This step is key! Lather the brushes into the liquid soap just as you would if you were washing your hair. Continue this for 45 seconds at minimum.
  4. Softly rinse the brushes under water and remove all of the soap. Keep rinsing until the water appears clear.
  5. Press the brushes with a paper towel (to help them dry quicker)
  6. Place the brushes onto a hand towel to sit flat to air dry before using for a few hours.

No matter what soft soap you use, you will feel much better about applying your makeup after doing this. Take the time to do this around every 2 weeks to ensure the longevity of your brushes

POWDER POWER

Many people wonder whether they are suppose to wear foundation, powder, or both? It really depends on how much coverage you’re trying to get. Unless it’s a special occasion, I usually just put on powder. This is for a couple reasons: 1) I don’t want to look caked on 2) the powder I use happens to give GREAT coverage. I use MAC Studio Fix (my specific shade is NC42 which works well with tanner skins that have a yellow undertone). This powder also works well OVER foundation to help set the liquidly texture of the foundation while giving off a silky, soft finish. Also, I’ve never had the problem of a break out with this product. For those who have oily skin, this product can help cover up that issue and has great lasting power and for those who have dry skin (like me), it doesn’t make my skin flake. I put it on when I start my morning and don’t feel the need to touch up throughout the day (granted I do like to add a little bronzer/blush over the powder mid day). Beyond the quality of the product, the packaging is sleek. As I’ve said before, the key to full coverage with powder is using a large application brush rather than the sponge provided in the product.

For those of you who like a light powder, this product is NOT for you! The coverage and lasting power is high. If you are looking for a lighter powder, I recommend trying Bare Minerals Matte. You can find it on Amazon for $10 dollars cheaper than at a department store. I have tried this product and although it is not what I am specifically looking for out of a powder, it feels as though you relatively have no powder on. The product does NOT weigh down your face and works great as a setting powder for foundation. As all Bare Minerals products, it is relatively better for your skin than most products. I recommend applying this product with a kabuki brush

HEAVY COVERAGE: MAC Studio Fix

LIGHT COVERAGE: Bare Minerals Matte SPF 15

Do you prefer a powder with heavy or light coverage?

5 MINUTE MAKEUP

There are so many days when I am already 10 minutes late for class, 30 minutes late for an appointment, or hours late to meet up friends for dinner. I’m out of the shower, my hair is still soaking wet, and I have NO idea what I’m going to wear. It’s times like these that my 5 minute makeup routine comes into use. I think it’s great for women to develop a quick and efficient way to apply their makeup for those days where every minute counts. You don’t want to neglect putting on any makeup, but at the same time you don’t want to feel SO rushed that you mess up (which sometimes leads to more time wasted!).

A few months ago, my friends were annoyed of how long I was taking to get ready. I told them that I would be ready in 5 minutes (obviously thinking 5 min in girl code means 15..or maybe 30?). Being the impatient friends that they are, I was put to the test. They told me they didn’t believe that I could do my makeup in 5 minutes so they actually timed me! This is when my makeup in under 5 minutes routine developed. I ended up finishing right over four minutes. This made me realize how convenient and necessary it is to have a quick makeup regimen that still still gives the results as if you spent hours doing it. Here is MY 5 minute makeup routine:

   CONCEALER-00:35 (35 seconds)

  • Place under your eyes to cover up dark circles. I use my finger.

   POWDER-01:20 (45 seconds)

  • Use a big brush to apply over the entire face.

  BRONZER-01:45 (25 seconds)

  • Focus on the cheekbones.

EYE LINER- 03:00 (1 minute and 15 seconds)

  • It’s okay if this part takes you the longest. Mainly because if you mess up top liner, you have to remove it and it ends up taking more time. I usually make my liner thicker when doing makeup in five. Since I am not adding as many products to my face, I try to highlight the products I am using drastically.

    MASCARA-04:00 (1 minute)

  • I don’t compromise time here either. If it takes me 15 extra seconds to make sure my lashes don’t clump together, then so be it!

    LIP GLOSS04:11 (10 seconds)

  • I normally put lipstick with a bit of gloss over it, but in my quick routine, I changed it up and ended up discovering that I like the way gloss looks against my lips without applying lipstick first. It gives a more natural look.

Everyones routine should be different. With five minutes, it’s important to focus more time on the features you want to highlight.  The key isn’t putting everything on quicker, but putting on the items that matter the most. So on a day where you have an hour to spend getting ready, you may put on some primer, lip stick, lip liner, blush,  eye shadow, a highlighter, etc..but when you’re in a rush, focus on the core items that really make a difference on your face. I challenge you guys to do your makeup in under 5 minutes without compromising the quality of the routine. You may discover a new look that you previously didn’t know you could create. It’s amazing what being on a time crunch can do to your skills!

HOW TO ROCK IT: PINK LIPS

Heres a few tips to follow when wearing pink lips:

  • MAKEUP: Pink lips work with the same rules as red lips or anyone other dramatic lip color. You can’t overdo the eye or face makeup if you’re wearing it or they look will go from glamish to clownish.
  • CLOTHES: When picking out an outfit to go with your pink lips, try something different too! You’re already going out of your comfort zone, so why not go all the way? I like how pink lips look with leather items (leather jackets, tights, or accessories). If you’re feeling really bold, mix and match the pink lip with a different color outfit rather than the standard white or black pieces. Pink lips with an yellow blouse? Pink lips with a green jumper? The sky is the limit!
  • HAIR: This depends on the occasion, but if you really want the pink lips to stand out, wear your hair up. This will bring more attention to your face and specifically to your lips. If you are still trying to get adjusted to the look, wear your hair down but try something different. If you normally wear a side part, change it to the middle. If you always wear your hair straight, do some soft waves.

What do you wear and pair your pink lip with?

THE PERFECT PINK LIPS

I LOVE fun lip colors! I’ve always been a fan of red lips on my skin, but it’s been a struggle to find the right shade of pink to match my skin tone without making me look silly (by pink I mean a BRIGHT shade not a nude toned). I know a lot of my friends want to explore with different lipsticks too. Because they can’t find a shade that fits their skin, they resort to the typical nude lip look.

This set me on a mission. I went to Macy’s to try on an assortment of colors and play around with the different brands. I wanted a color that fit the season. It had to be vibrant, fun, and scream fierce. I’ve been noticing lately that celebs are going beyond the red lip color on the red carpet too. Here are some of them rocking the perfect pink lips:

After being on the hunt, I found three great shades! They really make me feel like Barbie and work well with my skin. Here are my recommendations for the perfect pink lips:

1. L'Oreal Colour Riche Paris Wild Plum (Pink) 2. MAC Gulabi Bright Fuchsia 3.  YSL Forbidden Burgandy

These colors look VERY different your lips than they do just by looking at them. I was surprised to see some shades that appeared to be way too bright ended up fitting my skin color and some that looked really dark showed up super pink. Make sure to try the shade on and NOT purchase online. Also, they are listed in price from cheapest to most expensive. If you are having fun and just want to try a new color out, go for the cheaper one and see what you think, but keep in mind the pigmentation will not be as high.

I hope you guys try out these shades or other fun pink lip colors. They are great for spring and summer. Get out of your comfort zone and dare to be a trend setter. You will be surprise to see how many people admire you for taking risks and being different!

OVERRATED VS. UNDERRATED: MASCARA EDITION

Being the makeup addict that I am, I have tried all sorts department store and drug store mascaras. I am def a sucker for a good marketing campaign.  L'Oreal Paris, CoverGirl, and Revlon have some great commercials and brand ambassadors that draw me to their product (I wonder if the celebs endorsing the products actually use them?). I’m also a sucker for glam packaging which most of the luxury mascaras dominate over the cheapo mascaras (YSL, how are you SO beautiful?).

Although ads and packaging are fun and great, a mascaras quality is what truly matters. Everyone is generally looking for a mascara that 1)thickens 2)lengthens and 3)curls their lashes. Here is just a few I’ve tried and my thoughts:

  • Clinique High Impact Mascara- The formula was WAY too dry for me.
  • Maybelline Falsie- It clumps my lashes together and hard to get off.
  • Maybelline Great Lash- This mascara is always in magazines as a celeb/beautician fav. and is also super affordable.
  • MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash- You would think for a brand that was known to be dramatic, they would produce one quality mascara!
  • L'Oreal Paris Voluminous- It used to be my fav. but I realized it clumped my lashes more than making them voluminous.
  • Revlon Grow Luscious Waterproof- I am NOT a fan of waterproof mascaras.
  • YSL Volume Effect Faux Cils- What perfect packaging right? The whole idea behind this mascara is the “fake lash” look but doesn’t do much for thickening of lashes and focuses on lengthening. I think it is way too expensive too!
  • Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara- I tried it because a friend suggested it and didn’t think it gave me length or volume. All this mascara gave me was a headache because it wore off super fast!
  • Lancome Hypnose-I’m a fan because it makes my lashes look even longer than they already are, but for the price? No thanks.
  • Lancome Definicils-It separates lashes well, but I would use Hypnose before Definicil.

Everyone reacts to mascaras in different ways depending on the type of lashes they have. That being said, I think it’s important to describe my lash type before sharing my picks for most overrated and underrated products. I have long, thin lashes so when I am in search of a mascara I look for one that will make my lashes more voluminous. It’s important to pick a mascara that caters to YOUR individual lash needs and NOT just by what your friend or favorite celeb wears for the best results.

OVERRATED: DIORSHOW BY CHRISTIAN DIOR

It’s not that I don’t think this is a good mascara, it’s just that I don’t think it is worth the price. DiorShow is more about showing off the Christian Dior brand name than anything. Also, the mascara dried out fairly quick within the tube (so annoying). Although this mascara doesn’t flake or smudge, I find it useless for lash thickening. All in all, this product has been way too hyped up by magazines and the world. I just don’t get/agree with the obsession.

UNDERRATED: LASH BLAST BY COVERGIRL

Not in a million years did I think that I would find my fav. mascara from my local CVS. CoverGirl Lash Blast mascara perfectly separates my lashes, thickens them, and gives just the right amount of curl. It is SUPER affordable and doesn’t dry up easily. The formula is wet but not runny at the same time. It doesn’t smudge and is not a pain to get off. For those of you who have the same issue as me and need a mascara that will thicken your lashes without leaving any sort of clump, this is the one! P.S I’m not a fan of the waterproof version because it is much harder to get off. If you are trying this product for the first time, make sure to get the original one (NOT the waterproof) and see if it meets your needs.

MAKEUP: THE ROYAL WAY

FLAWLESS, SIMPLE, CLASSY. Those are the three words that come to mind when I think of Kate Middleton. The new duchess of Cambridge walked down the aisle this morning at Westminster abbey wearing McQueen. I die for Kate’s look on her wedding day! I don’t think there is a person out there who could say she didn’t look stunning.

When I heard that Kate was doing her own makeup, I had mixed thoughts. I get it, you’re a “commoner”, not a diva, but it is your WEDDING DAY (not to mention the ceremony of the century!). These pictures are going to go down in history and are being viewed by people all over the world. You sure you don’t want help getting that perfect glow for your wedding pics? Then again, maybe she is really good at doing makeup? Maybe she wants to look back on the day of her wedding and think how she had the option of any makeup artist in the world and chose to just be herself.

I feel like a lot of people don’t like when others touch their face. Personally, I love getting my makeup done. Although I am the makeup artist with my friends and enjoy doing my own makeup normally, it’s always fun to have someone else try different looks on your face for special occasions. Not only does it help me think of new ideas for the future, but it also makes me feel pampered! No matter if you’re the best makeup artist in the world, you can always learn from others and discover new techniques.

That being said, after seeing pictures of Kate on the day of the Royal Wedding, I am OBSESSED. Her makeup matched her perfectly! It wasn’t overdone and had just the right amount of glam to it. She has undeniable elegance, and I know she is going to do great things. So glad to have such a fab new duchess added to the British monarchy. You go Kate!

What are YOUR thoughts on Kate Middleton’s makeup for the Royal Wedding- SO simple or SO perfect?

LOOK AIRBRUSHED: THE PERFECT FOUNDATION

I’m not personally a fan of foundation, especially on a daily basis. I think my powder gives me enough coverage (without looking caked on). That being said, there are some occasions where it’s fun to add a little more makeup on your face! I was in search for the perfect foundation. I wanted something that 1) was light 2) provided full coverage 3) matched my skin tone 4) made my skin look flawless/airbrushed. Here are a few that I went through:

1. MAC Satin Finish 2. L'Oreal Paris True Match 3. Origins Stay Tuned 4. YSL Perfect Touch

When I worked at L'Oreal last summer in NYC, I got the opportunity to experiment with so many different brands and products that I had never tried before. That is when I came across my favorite foundation. Here it is:

MY FOUNDATION OF CHOICE: GIORGIO ARMANI FACE FABRIC

This foundation feels like a mousse and blends unbelievably well with my skin. It feels SO light and easy to apply with your fingers. I know that’s probably against the makeup gurus rules, but I love using my fingers to apply makeup. It does what no brush can do for me (and is more affordable!). I love the matte finish, and the coverage is phenomenal. When I look at pictures of myself the nights I wear this foundation, I really do feel like I’ve been airbrushed. The downside of the product is that it is pricey, but because I only wear foundation on rare occasions, I still have the original bottle I got last summer in NYC!

YOUR FACE IS A CANVAS: USE PRIMER!

I discovered primer a few years ago and realized what a money saver it ends up being! I’m so used to coating layers of makeup on in order for it to show up, but with primer, I no longer have to. I was going to Sephora to get my regular products and saw a girl getting her makeup done. The makeup artist described his work as a “masterpiece”. At first, I thought this was a bit extreme. I mean, this isn’t the Mona Lisa? I really feel like I now understand what he meant by that.

Our face is a canvas. We can “paint” it however we want. If you prime a canvas before painting it in order for the colors to pop and last, why wouldn’t you do the same to your face? This is especially useful for those of you who buy drug store products that aren’t as highly pigmented. Primer can help a dull, chalky eye shadow appear bright and radiant. There are two different kinds of primer I use:

For face: Smashbox ‘Photo Finish’ Light

What I love about the Smashbox primer is the light weight texture. It glides on easily and doesn’t make you feel like your makeup is caked on. I recommend getting the tube over the bottle so you can make use of every drop (I know the bottle looks prettier, but the tube is also easier for travel!). One tube can last up to 5 months!

SIDE NOTE: If you don’t care to try the product on before purchasing, you can find it on Amazon for 10-15 dollars cheaper.

For eyes: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

I got this free as apart of an eyeshadow kit and fell in love. Before this primer, I used MAC Paint Pot. I liked the MAC primer because of its matte finish (if you prefer the matte finish, I recommend the MAC primer), but it left creases in my eye due to its thick texture. The Urban Decay primer smoothly lays across the lid and feels light (not the mention fabo packaging!). The wand makes it easy to spread the primer and dab on any necessary areas. It really helps liner and shadows last longer without fading throughout the day.

If you want to hear other people’s thoughts, read more amazing reviews on the Urban Decay Primer on Sephora’s website.

BEAUTY OF THE WEEK: RIHANNA

Rihanna has had an amazing few months with the release of her album Loud. She’s been performing everywhere from the CMAs to American Idol. Rihanna made history this week for “the shortest span between a solo artist’s first and 10th No. 1s in the chart’s 52-year history.” She officially has 10 No.1 hits on Billboard!

Beyond breaking records, Rihanna’s fierce sense of fashion has made her into one of the world’s top fashion icons. She continuously reinvents herself year after year and always dares to do the unexpected. My favorite aspect of Rihanna is that she always pushes the limit and goes outside of the Hollywood norms. You can tell that Rihanna doesn’t care if people think her makeup is too crazy or her outfit isn’t ‘in’ because she knows that beauty is about being yourself. Rihanna ALWAYS looks stunning whether she has black, blonde, or red hair (I mean who would have thought she’d go red?!). You have to truly have stunning facial features to pull off some of the hairdos that she does. I love that every time she makes a public appearance she tries something new with her makeup (I feel like she would even look good bald with how great her makeup always is!). If there is one makeup tip I’ve learned from Rihanna it’s to explore different lip colors. She always pairs fun shadows with bright lipsticks! I would die to meet Rihanna’s glam squad and ask them how they always make her skin look SO flawless and radiant. Because of her confidence, talent, and demeanor, Rihanna is this weeks beauty of the week!

Check out Rihanna talking about being the fashion icon she is on the cover of Vogue. She talks about “taking a risk” and the “thrill” of fashion. I think she looks breathtakingly beautiful!

FABO EYES: THE "CAT-EYE" LINER LOOK

I’m a huge liner girl. I think eyeliner is a great way to make your eyes pop. What’s great about liner is that you can use it to make your makeup look dramatic OR light depending on the occasion. I personally think eye liner is one of those products you DON’T have to splurge money on. I love my pencil and liquid liners and they are from drug stores. To read what my favorite pencil liner is, check out my post on how to get my smoky eye look!  For most occasions, I use liquid liner for the top of my eyes and pencil for the bottom. I like using liquid for the top because you can shape the corner of your eye better with it. My favorite is the “cat-eye” look you can get with liquid liner. This is a great way to make your eyes pop without doing over kill with eye shadows. My favorite star to do this look is none other than Lauren Conrad:

So how do you know how far out to go with the liner? I found the best technique is using the end of your eyebrow and the far corner of your eye. Imagine a line connecting them and that’s the direction the liner should be pointing. I don’t recommend going too far out, but you can dramatize the length depending on the event.

This is a great way to change up the way you do your eye makeup. I feel like when people think of “cat-eye” they automatically assume heavy eye shadow. Sometimes you DON’T have to wear heavy shadow and can just use liner to give the look (once again depending on the occasion of course). The BEST eye makeup to compliment a simple cat eye look is as follows:

  • Heavy mascara: Make those lashes pop with several coats of mascara to your top lashes and a light coat to the bottom lashes.
  • Bottom liner: I start mine at the very corner, but once I reach mid eye, I begin to darken the amount of liner I use. **BEAUTY TIP** I like using black eye shadow as bottom eye liner with this look! I recommend trying it out. It gives a smolder look to the eyes.
  • Bottom shadow (OPTIONAL): Sometimes I line my bottom liner with a MAC White Frost eye shadow to add a pop since the liner on the bottom isn’t applied heavily. This still keeps the cat eye look simple. Keep in mind, the top lid SHOULD contain the heavier makeup for this look!

What YOUR favorite liner technique?

NUDE LIPS: THE SAFE, SEXY WAY

Everyone has that lip color that they love and usually resort to when nothing else looks right. It’s that color that makes you feel confident and ready for a night on the town. My go to lip color is the neutral look with a little gloss. It goes with every outfit and compliments heavy eye makeup well. My routine is usually to do a nude lip stick and top it off with a gloss. **BEAUTY TIP** For those of you who usually just put on a little gloss before going out, I recommend you try this out! It brings the right amount of attention to the lips and accents the rest of the face well. Here is my usual lip routine:

  1. Pick my favorite neutral lipstick color: Lancome Color Design Pale Lip
  2. Apply from left to right on both bottom and top lip.
  3. Pick my favorite neutral lip gloss color: MAC Florabundance A80
  4. Apply to the middle of bottom lip and dab lips together spreading the gloss evenly across both the bottom and top lip. This allows the gloss to feel goopy on your lips (especially important for MAC glosses because they are so thick).

LIPSTICK: I’ve been through several MAC VIVA Glam shades, and they work great too! I wanted to experiment so I tried out a new brand, and there was  something about the pigmentation of the Lancome Color Design that I loved. I don’t like using shiny or shimmery lipsticks; I believe that is the job of the gloss (not really a fan of glitter on lips anyways). The lipstick should just provide a base coat and be matte.

LIP GLOSS: What I love about the MAC lip gloss is how thick it is. You only have to use a little bit and it goes a long way. It stays on a long time too! The annoying thing about lip gloss is that we all want to take it with us when we go out. When we look in our purse the next morning, it’s usually gone. I hate when that happens after spending almost 20 bucks on a lip gloss. That is why I’ve learned to take a cheapo lip gloss out with me. I know the idea sounds annoying because you don’t feel like it gives the same impact as the MAC gloss, but I really think it’s the smart thing to do (after losing 10 too many). My favorite cheapo lip gloss is L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Soft Nude. It comes on very light compared to the MAC lip gloss but the color matches PERFECTLY with the Lancome lipstick I use.

Favorite celebs rocking the nude lip color. You can see how the nude lip adds the perfect shine but brings the attention to other features of the face (like the eyes)!

MOISTURIZER: THE KEY TO HEALTHY SKIN

Like I have said, I have EXTREMELY dry skin. Because of this, it is important that I moisturize my face constantly. The worst feeling is when you put powder on your face and you can just tell your skin is dry. An even worse feeling is when someone points out that your skin is flaking (puke)! I have tried every moisturizer out there from high-end to drug store. It annoys me thinking about how many bottles of moisturizer I’ve bought for 40-50 dollars EACH! I really don’t think they are worth it at all. There is NO NEED to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars to take care of your skin. I decided I wasn’t going to support any moisturizer that over prices their products. Because of this, I was able to find my two favorite moisturizers:

Clinique: Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion with Pump (NOT the gel)

                             Clinique Moisturizer

Olay: Active Hydrating Beauty Fluid (under ten bucks!)

                                               Olay Moisturizer

I recommend hitting the pump twice and putting it all over your face. Make sure you dab extra on your problem areas (mine is under my eyes and around my nose). There are three times during the day that putting on moisturizer is a must:

  1. After showering: The water and soap from the shower tends to dry out skin. It is important to moisturize your face right after to prevent flaking.
  2. Before applying makeup: This is ESSENTIAL to apply before adding any makeup onto your face.  If you wear primer, put this one BEFORE.
  3. Before bed: It is important to remove your makeup and apply moisturizer before bed. This is to help your skin “breathe” over night.

MUST-HAVE BRUSHES

The problem for most ladies is that they have all the right shades that work well with their skin but don’t know how to apply it. Half the key to having perfect coverage are the tools you use. I recommend investing in some quality brushes. If taken care of properly, they can last a LONG time. I noticed a huge difference in the way my powder, bronzer, blush, and eye makeup looked after I bought new brushes. I wanted to share my three MUST-HAVE brushes:

1. For applying powder to overall face: 134 MAC Large Powder Brush

                                MAC Powder Brush

This brush is great, BUT it is expensive. There are a few substitutes for this brush that work well too:

2. For applying bronzer to cheekbones: BareMinerals Full Coverage Kabuki Brush

                                                     BareMinerals Kabuki Brush

The amount of coverage a Kabuki brush gives is unreal. To be honest, I don’t even think you have to buy an expensive one. I lost my BareMinerals Kabuki brush recently and didn’t want to spend an absurd amount of money again and this one works well too:

For more tips on what bronzers work best with a Kabuki brush, check out my post on my favorite bronzers.

3. For blending of eye shadow: 222 MAC Tapered Blending Brush

                                               MAC Tapered Brush

This is my pick for the number one MUST-HAVE eye makeup brush. For tips on other great eye make up brushes, check out my post on how to get my smoky eye look.

SIDE NOTE: The reason some products are linked to Amazon.com instead of the retail store that carries it is because I want to try and find the best deal possible. If I don’t think the product requires in-store testing, I think it will benefit everyone the most to purchase directly online. If I find that people prefer that I link the products to the retail store, I will be happy to change that. Let me know!

WANT HIGH CHEEKBONES? USE BRONZER!

You know how everyone has that one product they have to put on their face no matter where they are going? My product is bronzer! Even if I don’t wear foundation, blush, concealer, or powder, I always put on bronzer. There is something about the way it makes my cheeks look that I love. A light brush of bronzer allows me to have the natural look without looking caked on for day to day activities.

Not everyone is a fan of bronzer. A lot of people don’t understand what’s the purpose of it if you have a dark complexion. Everyone always asks me “don’t you want to look lighter and doesn’t that stuff just make you look darker?” I don’t necessarily agree with that. I think bronzer has a way of making your cheeks glow and highlighting cheekbones. **BEAUTY TIP**It can also make those who don’t have very high cheek bones look as if they do. Just because you weren’t born with them doesn’t mean you can’t look like you have them! #justsaying

I have 3 favorite bronzers. I ranked them below in order of most to least favorite (but keep in mind all three are great and work differently for different people/occasions).

  1. Bare Minerals Warmth: This is my absolute FAV. It’s my every day bronzer. Because I already have tan skin, it provides just the right tone of red to my skin to help my cheekbones stand out.                                                          Bare Minerals Warmth
  2. MAC Bronzing Powder Matte Bronze: This is the bronzer I use more for when I go out. I purposely by the Matte one without shimmer because I like to add shimmer with a good blush and highlighter rather than just trying to use one product to do all three (gives a better finish).                                                              MAC Bronzer
  3. LORAC Tantalizer: For those of you who are looking for a product that DOES bronze, blush, and highlight all in one, this is it! It is highly pigmented and gives the same effect as the three in one product.

                                                                         LORAC Tantilizer

I wanted to show the difference between a celeb who actually has high cheek bones and one that just looks like they do with the help of their glam squad. What’s the Point? Well, I really want people to understand that you have the ability to look like these celebs do whether you believe it or not!

Jessica Biel (on the left) DOES have naturally high cheekbones while Christina Aguilera (on the right) does NOT. Christina Aguilera has a rounder face but look how much her cheeks are radiating! You too can make your cheekbones appear higher than they actually are with the proper tools.

SIDE NOTE: I always link the products I suggest to a website where you can buy them. If you want to try these products out, hit on the link and it will direct you to a retailer that sells it. I do recommend going into the store and trying it on first, but this will allow you to see the price of the product and a store that for sure carries it.

BEAUTY OF THE WEEK: J.LO

    JLO

This week Jennifer Lopez was crowned the "World’s Most Beautiful Woman" by People. She has had an AMAZING year with her recent role as a judge on American Idol, huge endorsement deal with L'Oreal Paris, a new album with a number one hit ft Pitbull, and now THIS!

I have to say that this title is well deserved. J.Lo is 41 years old, has had twins, and STILL looks drop dead gorgeous. I love the way her hair has been looking recently (granted they are probably extensions), and she always seems to have flawless skin! I’m a harsh critic when it comes to celeb’s make up because I think anyone how has an entire team of people helping them get ready should have no excuse to not look good; I must say that it is hard to find a picture of Jennifer Lopez (she def went through a rough patch during the Jenny from the block days) where she doesn’t look absolutely perfect. I hope to have skin as great as hers at her age! Big ups to Jennifer Lopez and her glam squad for making sure she never over does it but still keeps it interesting and fresh.

HIGHLIGHTERS: GLOW LIKE THE STARS DO

Does anyone else get really annoyed looking at pictures of famous people and wonder how their skin is ALWAYS glowing? Ladies, don’t let them fool you. I guarantee you that only 1% actually have a natural glow to their skin. The rest is in the hands of their make up artists. The mistake that a lot of girls make is buying products that have a natural shimmer in them already thinking this will do the trick of a highlighter.

The proper highlighter, if applied evenly, can give YOU the same brightening effect that it gives the stars! It’s all about finding the one that works best with your skin. This product is ALWAYS noticeable in pictures. People will start to tell you that your skin look radiant, and it’s all with the help of a highlighter. Below is my personal favorite highlighter:

Favorite Highlighter: MAC Pearl Cream Colour Base

                                                       MAC Pearl Cream Colour Base

I know it may look like the MAC eye shadows, but it’s not. It’s larger in size and isn’t a powdery substance. I’m a fan of this product because of its creamy texture (since I have dry skin). Also, a highlighter can be used on different parts of your face NOT just your cheekbones. My favorite places to apply highlighter are as follows:

  1. below the arch of my brow
  2. cheekbones
  3. right above your upper lip (just a TAD bit)
  4. right below your bottom lip (just a TAD bit)

**BEAUTY TIP** If you are insecure about having a big nose, putting a dab of the highlighter vertically across the middle of your nose is suppose to make it appear leaner (this was said by Kim Kardashian after all the rumors of her getting a nose job)

For those of you have oily skin, I recommend using an eye shadow as a highlighter. It may sound crazy, but the MAC White Frost (click here to read about how this product can also be used for smoky eyes) can be used on your cheek bones and actually helps make your skin feel less oily since it’s more of a powdery substance.

Do you use a highlighter?
